Cashmere Bengal Cats

The wild beauty of the Bengal, wrapped in a coat of silk.

Luxury • Elegance • Distinctively Bengal

The Cashmere Bengal is the long-haired expression of the Bengal cat, combining the breed’s distinctive wild-inspired appearance, intelligence and engaging personality with a beautifully soft, flowing coat.

Elegant and unmistakably Bengal, the Cashmere offers a remarkable variation of the breed we know and love.

WHAT IS A CASHMERE BENGAL?

The Cashmere Bengal is the long-haired expression of the Bengal cat — with the same distinctive Bengal character, colours and patterns beneath a beautifully longer coat.

A Cashmere Bengal is a long-haired Bengal cat. The longer coat occurs through inherited longhair genetics that can be carried unseen through generations of short-haired Bengals. When the appropriate genes are inherited from both parents, a Cashmere kitten can be born — while remaining a Bengal.

A Bengal in Every Respect

The easiest way to understand a Cashmere is to think of it simply as a long-haired Bengal. It retains the characteristics we associate with the Bengal, including its athletic appearance, intelligence, curiosity and distinctive spotted, rosetted or marbled patterns. The obvious difference is the longer, softer coat, which may develop a fuller tail, neck ruff and attractive furnishings as the cat matures.

Why Is It Called a Cashmere Bengal?

The name Cashmere reflects the soft, luxurious appearance and feel of the longer coat. Rather than describing a separate colour or pattern, Cashmere refers to the Bengal’s long-haired coat variety. A Cashmere can therefore occur in different Bengal colours and patterns.

Is a Cashmere Bengal a Pure Bengal?

Yes. A Cashmere does not stop being a Bengal because it has longer hair. Long-haired variants can occur within predominantly short-haired cat breeds. Familiar examples include the British Shorthair and British Longhair, and the Abyssinian and Somali. In the same way, the Cashmere represents the beautiful long-haired expression found within the Bengal breed.

Key Takeaway

Cashmere describes the coat length — not a different breed, colour or pattern. A Cashmere can still be Brown, Silver, Snow, Charcoal, Black or another Bengal colour and can display spotted, rosetted or marbled patterning

The Cashmere Bengal Coat & Appearance

Cashmere Bengals retain the athletic build, striking patterns and distinctive appearance of the Bengal breed, but their longer coat creates a softer and more flowing look. As the cat matures, the coat may develop beautiful furnishings that make the Cashmere particularly distinctive.

Coat Development With Age

Cashmere kittens may initially appear only slightly fluffier. Coat length, ruff, tail furnishings and overall texture become more apparent as they mature.

Why Do Some Bengal Cats Have Long Hair?

Long hair can naturally occur within predominantly short-haired cat breeds — and the Bengal is one of them.

The genetics for longer hair can be carried quietly through generations of short-haired Bengals before producing a long-haired kitten when the appropriate genes are inherited from both parents. This is not unusual in the cat world. Several breeds best known for their short coats also have familiar long-haired counterparts.

Familiar Examples

The Cashmere Bengal

In much the same way, the Cashmere does not stop being a Bengal because its coat is longer. It retains the Bengal’s distinctive appearance, patterns, intelligence and character — simply expressed beneath a beautiful longer coat.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cashmere Bengals

Quick answers to some of the questions prospective owners most often ask about the long-haired Bengal.

Yes. A Cashmere is a Bengal with a longer coat. Cashmere describes coat length rather than a separate breed.

Cashmere Bengals are less commonly seen than short-haired Bengals because the genetics for long hair must be inherited appropriately for the longer coat to be expressed.

Recognition and terminology can vary between cat registries. Cashmere is commonly used to describe the long-haired Bengal variety.

Their longer coat can make loose hair more noticeable, but Cashmeres are not necessarily heavy shedders. Seasonal changes and the individual cat also influence shedding.

Only slightly more than most short-haired Bengals. Gentle occasional grooming is normally more appropriate than intensive or excessive brushing.

No cat can be guaranteed to be hypoallergenic. Cat allergens are associated primarily with proteins produced by the cat rather than simply the length of its coat.

Coat length does not determine temperament. Personality is influenced by genetics, early socialisation, environment and the individual cat.

Yes. Cashmere Bengals can occur with different Bengal colour and pattern genetics, including Brown, Silver, Snow, Charcoal, Black and Smoke.

Yes. Short-haired Bengals can carry longhair genetics without displaying a long coat themselves. When the appropriate genetics are inherited from both parents, a Cashmere kitten can be produced.

Price can vary according to the breeder, pedigree, health programme and individual kitten. At Bengalheritage, future availability and pricing will be provided when Cashmere kittens become available.
